Do you have a noisy mind? It just might be ruining your life. Here’s why…
Ask yourself these questions:
-
Do you have an off button for your thoughts?
-
Do you have the authority over your thoughts?
-
Are you in the driver’s seat of your life?
If not, do you want to take back that authority? Did you know, that thoughts cause most of our suffering & it’s unnecessary? It’s not good for our well-being. When the mind chatter runs unhampered, it can ruin your life. Studies have shown that the dialogue we have with ourselves can significantly affect our health….e.g., blood pressure, heart & tissues of the body. Research tells us we have an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day. Out of those thoughts, approximately 80% are negative & 95+ are repetitive & random.
Putting our thoughts into perspective can be helpful. How many thoughts do you have in a 5 minute span of time? What about in a day? How much time is spent away from your life & in your mind? Are you preoccupied with past & future thoughts, the maybe’s, & what if’s… i.e., the chatter, voice in your head, ruminations, incessant stream of thinking, committee of opinions, the looping from your head to your heart then into your body…only to repeat itself over & over again.
Do any of these thought patterns sound familiar? What do you ruminate about?
- Oh no, I don’t remember his name. What is it? Why can’t I remember it? What’s he going to think?
- Wonder what that person thought about my mistake? I’m really stupid! I can’t believe I did that. Now what? I always do this. I can’t ever get it right!
- Wasn’t I supposed to call Susan today? She going to be mad. It’s too late now. Man…this is going to be bad. Now I’ll never go to sleep. Shut-up! What’s wrong with you?
- Why was I so angry today, my nails need new polish, I look fat in this, What does she think about me, I know she hates me, I hate myself, I should’ve picked up the milk this morning, I’m so stupid….
So, how much importance or power do you give your thoughts? As previously stated, most of our thoughts are negative, repetitive, and random. What’s worse is we get attached and often identify with them as if they’re a real threat. This creates unnecessary stress, pain, & suffering.
Did you know your thoughts are reflected in your emotions & then into your physical body? Did you also know, that the body doesn’t know the thoughts in your head aren’t real? Have you considered the costs of being in your head rather than being here in the present moment? e.g., …joy, health, achievements, peace of mind, etc.
Start by asking yourself these 4 clarifying questions whenever you are challenged. They will help you grow self-awareness by observing your thoughts. As you spend more time in the present moment, the noise will slowly lessen. Just try it for 21 days and see what happens.
- What am I thinking?
- What am I feeling?
- What do I need?
- How can I get it in a healthy way?
